Disappointment No. 2

Lewis Cine's spot on Minnesota's depth chart

Lewis Cine's career with the Vikings is taking a turn toward being a complete bust, and last night only sent it further in that direction. Cine's start in purple got off to a rough start. He was injured in camp his rookie season, fell behind on the depth chart, and then in Week 3, when Harrison Smith couldn't go, it was Josh Metellus who got the start and not the Vikings' first-round pick.

A week later, he ended up breaking his leg and missed the remainder of his rookie season. He worked his ass off in the offseason to get back on the field, and many assumed he'd earn a starting job in camp. Instead of that happening, Cine was clearly running with the twos and had a mixed bag of a preseason, where he made some nice plays but also had some very bad ones.

The Vikings ended up keeping six safeties this year, with Smith and Cam Bynum named the starters. Metellus was given that rover type of role, and when he went down with an injury early in the game against the Eagles, it was Theo Jackson who came on the field and not Cine.

This cemented just how far down Cine is on this depth chart and how the coaching staff views him. He couldn't beat out a guy the Vikings signed last October off the Titans practice squad.

Cine is literally the fifth safety on the depth chart, and it's actually worth wondering if Jay Ward would see playing time before the former first-round pick. Cine isn't close to being a contributor on this team, and last night's game confirmed that, and that's extremely disappointing.
