The Broncos’ roster seems set in many areas heading into next season (unless they make their own June 1 trades involving Courtland Sutton or Jerry Jeudy), but their biggest question may reside in the backfield.

Javonte Williams is coming off a multi-ligament knee injury, while Samaje Perine and Tony Jones Jr. are journeymen who are unlikely to profile as starters. With George Paton looking to save his own job, he might be willing to take a big swing, and that could mean making a phone call to his former employer.

Paton served as the assistant general manager to Rick Spielman when Dalvin Cook was drafted by the Vikings in 2017, and there’s a chance he could try to reunite this season. While Sean Payton is likely to have a bigger impact on personnel decisions, Paton could sell this as a way to build a multi-back committee – something Payton deployed with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram during his time with the New Orleans Saints.

The Broncos have just $6.4 million in cap space and might be looking to preserve their draft capital after the Wilson trade. But Paton can’t afford to just sit back and wait for next year, and acquiring Cook could be the splash he needs to keep his job.
