Free agent for the Vikings to avoid No. 5

Greg Zuerlein, kicker

Special teams was not great for the Minnesota Vikings in 2023. They weren't very explosive on returns and missed too many tackles but both the kicking and punting could use a re-evaluation this offseason.

Greg Joseph is set to return in 2024. He was a perfect 11/11 from under 40 yards and out but only made seven of his 13 tries from 40 yards or longer. Close accuracy is great, but having a kicker with a better combination of power and accuracy would be great.

It doesn't feel like that long ago since Greg Zuerlein was known as "Greg the Leg" in NFL circles. Zuerlein is entering his 13th season in the league and still has a big leg but doesn't have the short-range consistency of Joseph.

The Minnesota Vikings should go the old school route and sign an undrafted free agent kicker with a big leg to compete with Greg Joseph in training camp. Unless they can bring Zuerlein in with no guaranteed money for a competition, signing any kicker doesn't make much sense.
