Player No. 3

Johnny Mundt - TE

Johnny Mundt joined the Vikings last season as a backup tight end. He stepped up when Irv Smith Jr. went down with an injury and actually had a career season catching 19 balls for 140 yards and one touchdown. He took a back seat after the Vikings traded for T.J. Hockenson, but he did more than enough to prove his worth.

This offseason, the Vikings signed tight end Josh Oliver the moment the legal tampering period opened. He immediately entered the roster as tight end No. 2, and now Mundt finds himself in a battle to be the third option on Minnesota's tight end depth chart.

This will put him in a battle with second-year player Nick Muse. Muse was active for 10 games last year but never saw a snap on offense. However, he's got a little more weight on his frame than Mundt and is four years younger.

Muse did show plenty of skills as a receiver in college, and if his blocking in practice and the preseason looks adequate, the Vikings could decide to go with the younger player. This would make Mundt a cut candidate, thus eliminating him from the final 53-man roster.
