Running Back No. 1

Alexander Mattison

2022 Stats (with Minnesota Vikings):

  • 17 games
  • 74 carries, 283 rushing yards (3.8 average)
  • 5 rushing touchdowns
  • 15 catches, 91 receiving yards (6.1 average)
  • 1 receiving touchdown

After four years as Dalvin Cook's top backup, Alexander Mattison is expected to be given the opportunity to open up the 2023 season as Minnesota's No. 1 running back.

It will be interesting to see how the Vikings will use Mattison if he actually does end up as their starting running back for the 2023 campaign. Will Minnesota stay traditional and use him as a three-down back (like Kevin O'Connell says he's capable of being), or will the team's approach see them use more of a mixture of all the running backs on their roster?

Whatever the Vikings decide to do, Mattison is likely going to be on the field more than he ever has before. Will he make the most of his increased opportunities, or will he end up losing the top spot the depth chart to another running back on Minnesota's roster at some point next season?
