Prospect No. 3

Trey Benson - RB (Florida State)

The Vikings suddenly find themselves in need of a running back. They recently cut Alexander Mattison and now have Ty Chandler topping the depth chart.

That isn't a horrible thing as Chandler looked good last year, but they need more talent at the position as Kene Nwangwu is simply a kick returner and DeWayne McBride should be in the arena league.

One guy who has to just about be at the top of their RB list after the Combine is Florida State's Trey Benson. Benson has very good size at 6-feet and 216 pounds. His testing was off the charts, with a 4.39-second 40-yard dash, a 33.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10-foot-2 broad jump.

Benson's tape is also very good, as he shows a nice combination of power, vision, and agility. The only real concern was about his long speed, and he answered those questions resoundingly at the Combine.

It's still unclear how much the Vikings value a running back or what type they are looking for. They may just wait until later and grab a power back to pair with the shiftier and quick Chandler and use a running back by committee approach.

However, if they want a player who can be a true workhorse and be the guy who gets 20 to 25 touches a game, Trey Benson showed he can be just that.

If the Vikings do covet him, they'll have to consider him at pick No. 42, because there is no shot he makes it to their next pick when they are on the clock in the fourth round.
