Team No. 3

New York Giants

Sometimes, desperation can force a team to spend to fill its holes on the open market. The Giants could be that team this offseason as Brian Daboll looks to pick up the pieces after a disappointing season.

New York surprised many in 2022 when they made the playoffs and picked up a playoff win as Daniel Jones ripped through Ed Donatell’s defense in a Wild Card matchup with the Vikings. The performance helped Jones get a lucrative contract extension last spring, but he struggled before tearing his ACL last November, and the Giants finished with a 6-11 record.

While quarterback play was a major reason for their struggles, the Giants’ pass rush didn’t do them any favors. The Giants finished 17th with a 20.9 percent pressure rate and 28th with 34 sacks last season and it spurned an overhaul of the coaching staff.

Although defensive coordinator Wink Martindale resigned as part of the overhaul, the Giants still have defensive line coach Andre Patterson, who helped develop Hunter during his second stint in Minnesota from 2014-2021.

With $19.4 million in cap space, it could be tough to squeeze a big contract for Hunter under the cap. But if the Giants decide to select a rookie quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the draft, it could open a salary window for the Giants to spend big in free agency.
