Earlier this month, it essentially seemed to be a done deal that veteran running back Cam Akers was going to re-sign with the Minnesota Vikings. Many were reporting that Akers was going to return to the Vikings for a second season as long as he could pass a physical.
Well, either he didn't pass his physical with Minnesota, or contract talks broke down because, on Sunday, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported that Akers has signed with the Houston Texans.
It hasn't been revealed exactly why the veteran running back didn't return to the Vikings, but his decision to sign elsewhere should make other rushers who are lower on Minnesota's depth chart feel better about their chances of making the team's final 2024 roster.
Cam Akers signing with Houston Texans might be a blessing in disguise for Minnesota Vikings
Despite only appearing in six games with the Vikings last season, Akers found a way to make an impact whenever he lined up in the team's offensive backfield. His best performance in purple and gold in 2023 took place during Minnesota's big Week 7 win over the San Francisco 49ers when he finished with 61 total yards on 12 touches.
Unfortunately, Akers's season came to an unexpected end when he tore his Achilles in the Vikings' Week 9 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The injury was extra disappointing for the running back, as it was the second time he had suffered a torn Achilles since 2021.
But with Akers signing with the Texans on Sunday, it's possible that Minnesota had some significant concerns about his latest Achilles injury. Not that he was going to cost much to bring back, but the Vikings potentially felt that the risk of him getting re-injured or suffering a decline in performance in 2024 was too large to take a chance on.
While some might be disappointed with the news, Akers ending up with Houston could turn out to be a benefit for Minnesota. Not only do the Vikings not have to worry about him missing time next season due to injury, but the team can now turn its focus on developing some of their other running backs.
Akers landing with the Texans means Minnesota running back Ty Chandler should be able to get even more opportunities with the football in his hands next season, and there might actually be a spot on the team's final 2024 roster for someone like DeWayne McBride.
