Kirk Cousins adds another milestone to his Vikings career
By Adam Patrick
Midway through the second quarter of their Week 3 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins found tight end Josh Oliver for a four-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.
With the score, Cousins has now thrown for the second-most touchdowns in the history of the Vikings franchise. Only Fran Tarkenton tossed more touchdowns during his tenure wearing a Minnesota purple and gold jersey.
During his career with the Vikings, Tarkenton threw for 239 touchdowns. With his toss to Oliver on Sunday, Cousins increased his total to 160 touchdown passes in his Minnesota career.
Heading into the matchup with the Chargers, Cousins' career touchdown pass total was tied for second in Vikings history with former Minnesota signal-caller Tommy Kramer.
Sunday's moment was just one of many instances in which Cousins has added his name to the Vikings' all-time record book since he joined the team in 2018.
During the last couple of years, the argument about Cousins being considered the second-best quarterback in Minnesota history has certainly picked up more steam, especially after his performance in 2022.
Some have argued that Daunte Culpepper deserves to be regarded as the second-best quarterback in Vikings history. A case can be made for Culpepper, but Cousins has continued to improve his case with his consistent play in a Minnesota uniform during the last few seasons.
Cousins still has a long way to go before he even comes close to surpassing the number of touchdowns Tarkenton threw in a Vikings uniform. And with the way Minnesota appears to be preparing for Cousins' exit sooner than later, he's likely just going to hold onto that No. 2 spot for the remainder of his time in purple.
