A prediction was recently made that has Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins signing a multi-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason.
For the last few years, there has typically been a moment during each offseason that links current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins to the San Francisco 49ers.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has raved about Cousins ever since the two worked together during their time with the Washington Commanders in 2012 and 2013. There was even a report that came out earlier this year that revealed Shanahan and the 49ers almost traded for Cousins back in 2017.
Well, in a few weeks, Minnesota's veteran quarterback is set to become a free agent, and if you thought San Francisco getting to the Super Bowl this past season with Brock Purdy as their starting signal-caller would put to bed any thought of Cousins signing with the 49ers this year, you've already been proven wrong.
Kirk Cousins predicted to leave Minnesota Vikings for San Francisco 49ers in 2024
After Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco has now come up short in both of their Super Bowl appearances with Shanahan as their head coach. For whatever reason, the 49ers just can't seem to get over the hump with him leading the way.
Could this be the offseason where we finally see Shanahan and San Francisco make a significant effort to sign Cousins?
Well, Sports Illustrated's Connor Orr is someone who believes this could happen. In fact, Cousins signing a two-year contract with the 49ers this offseason is something Orr recently predicted to happen.
Here's what Orr had to say about his prediction that the veteran quarterback will sign with San Francisco this year.
"Shanahan wants fast processors who don’t miss throws. His affinity for Cousins is known. If the 49ers plan on running it back, it makes sense to bolster the QB room."
Orr pointed out how the 49ers head coach recently admitted that he attempted to convince Tom Brady to suit up for his team last year when there was some uncertainty about Purdy after the young passer injured his UCL.
Purdy performed very well during the 2023 regular season, but his play out on the field took a bit of a dip once the playoffs began.
Now, Cousins has never been known as a successful quarterback in the playoffs, but would that matter to Shanahan? Would he just want to see how far San Francisco can get with a passer that he's always wanted to reunite with?
Orr's prediction is certainly an interesting one, and given the fact that Cousins will be free to sign with any team that presents him with a contract offer this offseason, will Shanahan finally stop delaying the inevitable and convince the 49ers to sign the veteran signal-caller?
