After a forgettable 2023 campaign with the Minnesota Vikings, edge rusher Marcus Davenport landed with the Detroit Lions earlier this year, and in his regular-season debut this past Sunday, he put together a solid performance against the Los Angeles Rams with six pressures, one tackle, and 0.5 sacks.

However, as was the case for the majority of his tenure with the Vikings last year, Davenport is already sitting out of practice with the Lions due to an injury.

Following Detroit's practice on Wednesday, the team revealed on its first injury report of the week that Davenport was a non-participant in practice due to a groin injury. The severity of the injury is currently unknown, but the Lions might be about to find out why the Vikings didn't make a legitimate effort to re-sign the veteran edge rusher this year.

Davenport has been in the league since 2018 when the New Orleans selected him with a first-round pick in that year's NFL Draft. He wound up spending the first five years of his pro career with the Saints, where he put up decent numbers, but not good enough for them to stop him from hitting free agency in 2023.

As a free agent last year, Davenport was one of the first players to sign with Minnesota. The Vikings were hoping to pair him with Danielle Hunter to form a dangerous duo of edge rushers.

Unfortunately, multiple injuries prevented Davenport from making much of an impact with Minnesota, as he only appeared in four games for them last season.

He hit free agency again this past March, and he quickly landed a one-year contract from Detroit that is worth up to $10.5 million.

Against the Rams on Sunday, he was on the field for 49 of the Lions' defensive snaps (63 percent), which is the second-highest defensive snap count he's had since Week 4 of the 2022 season.

Detroit fans seemed to be happy with his performance in Week 1, but as Vikings fans learned last season, any excitement about Davenport has the potential to be short-lived, thanks to his inability to stay off the injury report.
