Minnesota Vikings 2023 mid-season rookie report card
By Nik Edlund
Seventh-Round Pick: DeWayne McBride - RB (UAB)
There was a lot of buzz surrounding DeWayne McBride when the Vikings drafted him in the seventh round. He was ultra-productive at UAB, rushing for over 3,500 yards and 36 touchdowns in his career.
Many draft experts deemed him the steal of the Vikings draft, and there was buzz building that he had a chance to earn carries out of the gate and maybe even push to be the starter as the season progressed.
Instead, the opposite happened. McBride looked timid and overmatched in his preseason performances. He seemed to shy away from contact and was indecisive about what holes to hit. This led to him being cut from the final 53-man roster and eventually being signed to the practice squad.
With Cam Akers out, he's likely to get called up to the active roster. Time will tell if that equates to him getting touches, but if he does end up getting meaningful carries and accumulates some stats, that would be a major surprise at this point.
