The Minnesota Vikings and star wide receiver Justin Jefferson are not expected to reach an agreement on a contract extension before Sunday's 2023 regular-season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.
Schefter also added that the plan for the Vikings and Jefferson is now to "revisit" the negotiations about an extension after the conclusion of the 2023 season.
An extension for Minnesota's top receiver was expected to get done this year, but for whatever reason, the two sides were unable to get a deal completed.
Luckily for the Vikings, Jefferson isn't expected to sit out any games this season with the hopes of forcing the team to give him a new contract. Minnesota will have him on the field when they begin their 2023 schedule against the Bucs on Sunday.
Jefferson is coming off of a monster season in 2022 that resulted in him winning the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year award. In just three years in the league, he has quickly emerged as arguably the best wide receiver in the entire NFL.
Unfortunately, for Jefferson, he'll have to wait a little longer to be rewarded handsomely for the accomplishments he's made in a Vikings uniform so far.
