With Mekhi Blackmon going down with a season-ending injury last week and Shaq Griffin currently dealing with an injured hamstring, the Minnesota Vikings reportedly signed veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau on Tuesday, according to NFL Media's Mike Garafolo.
Moreau entered the league in 2017 after the Washington Commanders drafted him with a third-round pick and he's started a total of 56 games during his pro career as a member of the Commanders, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, and Denver Broncos.
Last season, he suited up for the Broncos, and he wound accumulating 46 tackles, seven pass breakups, and one interception in 16 appearances (11 starts). Moreau finished with a 62.4 defensive grade from PFF, the second-best single-season grade of his NFL career.
Are the Minnesota Vikings still looking to add another talented cornerback before the 2024 season?
Following Tuesday's addition of Moreau, some might think that Minnesota is now no longer interested in signing one of the top veteran corners who are still available like Stephon Gilmore, Patrick Peterson, or Xavien Howard.
It's possible, but the Vikings still have plenty of cap space ($19.1 million, according to Over The Cap) and plenty of time to sign a more notable cornerback before the start of their 2024 regular season on September 8th.
During a recent episode of "Purple Daily", SKOR North's Judd Zulgad brought up the possibility of some of the older free agents like Gilmore and Peterson wanting to wait until after teams are done with training camp before signing somewhere. Camp is a grind, and guys who have been in the NFL for more than a decade would likely rather skip these practices if they are given the opportunity to do so.
This definitely seems like something that could happen. But until it actually does, Minnesota will have to attempt to finish its training camp with a banged-up secondary.
