Less than 24 hours after the Minnesota Vikings got a victory over the Cleveland Browns, a big piece of news was handed down. Fans know the team is struggling for depth at cornerback but that deficiency might not be as glaring anymore.

Last week, the Vikings brought free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore in for a visit that didn't immediately result in the decorated defender signing a contract to join the purple and gold for the upcoming 2024 NFL season.

Finally, a decision has been made and a deal has been struck between Minnesota and Gilmore to get him in a Vikings jersey. This deal comes somewhat late in the preseason, but shouldn't impact the veteran's play this year.

Vikings agree to terms with former NFL Defensive Player of the Year

Early on Sunday morning, ESPN insider Adam Schefter shared on his official X account that free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore and the Minnesota Vikings have reached a deal in principle on a one-year contract.

Gilmore should be considered an immediate starter in Minnesota's defense. The five-time Pro Bowl corner will be an important piece of defensive coordinator Brian Flores' unit and provide experience and stability in the secondary.

The one-year deal, which Schefter reported to be worth up to $10 million, includes a $7 million guarantee. It is a big price tag but Minnesota is also getting a big-time player who should get the defense more respect this year.

Stephon Gilmore was named the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was a key member of the New England Patriots team who defeated the Los Angeles Rams to win Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia.

Currently 33 years old, Gilmore is expected to play his 13th NFL season with the Minnesota Vikings. It is surprising he wasn't signed by another cornerback-needy team before this point in the preseason, but the purple and gold were fortunate to land the star free agent defender.

For a team that has struggled with injuries and hardship in a big way this offseason and preseason, it is nice to get some positive news about a player who could be a big help in getting some excitement for the upcoming Vikings season.

Welcome to the Minnesota Vikings, Stephon Gilmore! We at The Viking Age are excited to see what the veteran cornerback can bring to the team for the 2024 NFL season.
