No. 84 likely to remain unretired by the Vikings in 2023

The No. 84 jersey has been assigned to a new member of the Minnesota Vikings, meaning Randy Moss likely won't be getting his number retired this year.
When people think of the No. 84 in the NFL, former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss is the player who typically comes to mind first for many.
Before he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 after his first time on the ballot, Moss began his career with the Vikings. Things didn't end well for the talented pass-catcher in Minnesota, but he still is viewed as one of the best Vikings of all time.
Despite this, his jersey number still hasn't been retired by Minnesota, and it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.

Following the departure of tight end Irv Smith Jr. this offseason, some thought the Vikings might take advantage of the No. 84 becoming vacant and finally retire Moss' number this year. However, we recently found out that this probably won't be happening anytime in the near future.
Jersey numbers for Minnesota's newest additions have now been revealed to the public and tight end Josh Oliver is the latest member of the Vikings to be awarded the No. 84 since Moss' departure from the franchise.
Oliver wore the No. 84 on his jersey during his last two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, and now, he gets to wear the same number in a different shade of purple next season.
It's possible that Oliver could wind up switching his jersey number before the start of the upcoming regular season when more numbers are freed up after final cuts are made. But, at this point, it seems like the jersey number that Moss made iconic during his time with the Vikings will continue to remain unretired in 2023.
