Ranking every Minnesota Vikings head coach since 2000
By Adam Patrick
3rd-best Vikings head coach since 2000:
Dennis Green (2000 - 2001)
- Record: 16-16
- Playoff Appearances: 1
- Playoff Record: 1-1
- Division Titles: 1
If this was a list that dated back to 1990, Dennis Green would easily be at the top of it. But since we only went back to the 2000 season, Green's spot on this particular list isn't as high as some might have thought it would have been.
During the 2000 campaign with Green as their head coach, the Vikings were great. In Daunte Culpepper's first year as Minnesota's starting quarterback, the team had the fifth-best scoring offense in the NFL, they finished with an 11-5 record, and they won the NFC Central division title.
Unfortunately, the Vikings' journey in the 2000 season came to an end in the NFC Championship when they were obliterated by the New York Giants. But even with the loss, Minnesota seemed on the path to consistent success with Green, Culpepper, and superstar wide receiver Randy Moss leading the way.
But then came the 2001 season. It was just a disaster from the start. The Vikings began the 2001 campaign with only one win in their first four games, and then they only managed to earn four more victories in their final 12 matchups.
Minnesota finished the season with a 5-11 record, their fewest wins since 1984, and Green didn't even make it to their final game. The Vikings fired their longtime head coach with just one week left in the season after he and former owner Red McCombs couldn't agree on how the team should be run in terms of leadership. McCombs even said that Green's departure had nothing to do with Minnesota's poor record in 2001.
