Recent take about Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy will make your brain melt
By Adam Patrick
For the first time in the entire history of the franchise, the Minnesota Vikings used a top-10 pick to draft a quarterback earlier this year when they selected former Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, McCarthy is going to be on the sidelines for his entire rookie campaign with the Vikings after undergoing season-ending knee surgery following the team's first preseason game last month. Despite the setback, Minnesota liked what they saw from the young quarterback before his injury, and it sounds like they're excited to see what they can achieve in the future with him under center.
However, not everyone believes the Vikings are entirely satisfied with McCarthy as the team's next starting quarterback. One local Twin Cities columnist even thinks Minnesota could add another signal-caller in the first round of the draft as soon as 2025.
Minnesota Vikings would be insane to draft another first-round QB in 2025 after selecting J.J. McCarthy this year
In a recent article shared by the Pioneer Press' Charley Walters, he wrote the following about how he wouldn't be shocked if the Vikings used a top-five draft selection on a quarterback next year.
"[J.J. McCarthy] is out for the season after surgery last month to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Should the Vikings suffer a disheartening season, which appears likely, and end up with a top-five pick in next spring’s draft, it wouldn’t be a shock if they were to choose another quarterback of the future.
The Vikings took McCarthy with the No. 10 pick in April’s draft. Georgia’s Carson Beck is considered the top QB in next year’s draft, probably a top-five pick.
When Jimmy Johnson was in Dallas, he had Troy Aikman as his quarterback. But he also spent a first-round pick in the 1989 supplemental draft to take Steve Walsh from Miami via St. Paul. Once Aikman won the starting job, the Cowboys traded Walsh to the New Orleans Saints for first-, second- and third-round draft picks.
Nothing is certain."
Walters is right.
Wait, sorry, let's clear that up. Walters is right about nothing being certain in life.
While that is true, one of the safest bets a human being on this planet can currently make is that Minnesota will not be using a top-five draft pick on a quarterback prospect a year after selecting McCarthy.
There has literally been no indication of the Vikings having even a sliver of interest in drafting another quarterback in the first round next year. In fact, the Minnesota Star Tribune's Ben Goessling shared on a recent episode of the "Access Vikings" podcast that he heard the team would have been okay with playing McCarthy sooner than expected in 2024.
Minnesota loved what they saw from their rookie quarterback this offseason, and the team using a top-five draft pick on another young passer in 2025 would be an incredibly foolish decision.
Not sure why this is so difficult for some to understand. But, apparently, it is.
