The Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray earlier this offseason, giving them a proven quarterback to mentor J.J. McCarthy. The addition of Murray means that the Vikings likely won't be looking to make a big move at the position this offseason.
That didn't stop Mark Morales-Smith of OnSI Fantasy Sports from coming up with a trade proposal involving the Vikings, though. Morales-Smith proposed a trade between the Vikings and San Francisco 49ers that would involve Minnesota sending McCarthy and a fourth-round pick to the Niners in exchange for Jones.
"Getting rid of McCarthy is an addition by subtraction. It also makes sense to bring in competition for Murray, who is not a lock to pan out.
He is viewed as clearly better than Jones, and rightfully so, but there is a reason he was cut by the Cardinals and the Vikings were able to bring him in for next to nothing."
Mac Jones trade proposal makes zero sense for Minnesota Vikings after signing Kyler Murray
Sure, McCarthy hasn't worked out so far in Minnesota, but he's about to enter Year 3 (and for him, it's really Year 2 since he missed his rookie season due to injury), so there's still some hope that he can be the guy.
Murray's presence will hopefully help, and it just really wouldn't make sense to bring Jones in when the Vikings already have Murray on the roster.
Had the Vikings not signed Murray and were entering the season with just McCarthy, then yes, adding Jones could have made a lot more sense. That is not the timeline we're living in, however.
Jones had a nice revamp to his career in San Francisco during the 2025 season (somewhat similar to what Sam Darnold went through with the Vikings in 2024), and he proved he still has what it takes to be a starting quarterback.
That won't be with the Vikings, though, at least not in 2026. More than likely, Jones will continue to back up Brock Purdy, and maybe he'll get dealt before the deadline, but right now, that's not in the cards for the Vikings.
