Who will be a quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings during the 2025 NFL season? That is the question many fans and experts are asking since last year's starter, Sam Darnold, is set to hit free agency this offseason.

The only thing that seems certain at that position right now is that J.J. McCarthy will be on the roster, but everything else is up in the air. Not only is Sam Darnold hitting free agency, for the Vikings, but Nick Mullens, Brett Rypien, and Daniel Jones are also expected to do so.

Minnesota could re-sign one or more of those quarterbacks, but the Vikings will have to be smart since they have limited draft capital in the 2025 NFL Draft and will likely need to fill multiple holes with free agents.

Recent report adds doubt to Daniel Jones re-signing with Minnesota Vikings

Considering how many teams need a starting quarterback or a quality backup for next season, these passers could be in high demand. The PHNX Podcast recently shared an episode with a report that one of the former Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks might be pursued by the Arizona Cardinals this offseason.

In the video hosted on YouTube, the hosts mentioned that the Arizona Cardinals will be looking for competition and a high-floor backup for Kyler Murray this offseason, and their target will be former Giants and Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones.

"Don’t be surprised if Daniel Jones is an Arizona Cardinal during free agency."

Minnesota's signing of Daniel Jones only for him to be on the practice squad and not be activated until the playoffs may seem odd to some fans, but the move made a ton of sense for Jones and the Vikings.

While on the practice squad, Jones was able to sign with any team he pleased but if that didn't happen, the Vikings would own the rights to any compensatory pick earned when he is signed this offseason.

In a move of what was essentially buying a draft pick, the Minnesota Vikings still have the option of attempting to re-sign Daniel Jones, gut if they do so, they will forfeit any potential compensatory pick that would have been earned.

Even if the Minnesota Vikings roll with J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback in 2025, they will likely want an experienced passer behind him as a backup or mentor along with another player at the position to round out the depth chart. If there is heavy competition for Jones or another quarterback, the purple and gold likely won't overpay for their services.
