The Minnesota Vikings scrapped their way to a 9-8 record last season. Even though that relegates them to the 18th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, they're in a prime spot to grab an instant starter who'd elevate their whole defense.
Previous GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had a rather disastrous four-year run in the draft, which yielded shallow roster depth and capped the team's ceiling. His interim replacement, Rob Brzezinski, must nail the Vikings' first-round selection at the very least to help Minnesota keep pace in the highly competitive NFC North.
Harrison Smith has long been a franchise cornerstone for the Vikings. He's weighing retirement, but his long-term replacement could be had in the form of a certain rookie out of Toledo.
An obvious Harrison Smith successor awaits the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren lives up to the mascot he played for in college. Yes, the Toledo Rockets, of MACtion fame, deployed the human equivalent of a rocket in McNeil-Warren in their secondary, and he figures to be the next big thing to come from that program since Quinyon Mitchell.
Other top safeties like Ohio State's Caleb Downs and Oregon's Dillon Thieneman could be off the board by the time Minnesota goes on the clock on draft night. As long as McNeil-Warren is still there, the Vikings should sprint in the card with his name on it.
Few defensive coordinators love to be as aggressive and attack-oriented as Brian Flores. He leans into blitzes and exotic simulated pressures, which means he needs versatile defensive backs with high football IQs to make his schemes sing.
McNeil-Warren is best suited to play in the box, yet he has the range to play deep center field. You never quite know where you'll see EMW aligned on any given snap.

Toledo’s Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is an ELITE prospect⭐️ https://t.co/rgsEhjskrQ pic.twitter.com/70keYUNYzm
Flores loves to deploy a lot of unconventional Tampa 2 (Cover 2) looks. He's played Harrison Smith increasingly close to the line of scrimmage as his career has gone on.
McNeil-Warren fits the mold there as well. He can sprint into the MIKE linebacker spot to play coverage on Flores' creative blitz designs, or flex out to the slot to muddy the post-snap picture if Flores brings multiple rushers off the edge.
It's not often you see a predominantly box safety display the type of coverage chops McNeil-Warren has. As the video above indicates, he had a 92.0 PFF coverage grade in 2025. Opponents rarely bothered to throw in his direction, yet he logged five forced incompletions and two interceptions on just 15 targets across 336 coverage snaps.
Even when McNeil-Warren doesn't stop a play dead in its tracks, he's a threat to take the ball away, with eight forced fumbles across the last three seasons. That makes him a great fit for Flores' defense, too, as the Vikings ranked first in the NFL last year with 13 takeaways off of fumble recoveries.
Whether Smith returns for another season or not, McNeil-Warren is the perfect, plus-sized, all-around playmaker the Vikings should target with the 18th pick to ensure Flores' defense keeps humming. The young man is a D-A-W-G DAWG — and is the ultimate dream prospect for Brian Flores.
Dearest Skol Nation, if the following testimony from draft guru Todd McShay doesn't get you fired up about the possibility of drafting Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, I don't know what will.
