The aftermath of the Minnesota Vikings' humbling loss on Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons has included news that no fan wanted to hear. Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain and is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.
In the meantime, it'll be backup quarterback Carson Wentz stepping in for the second-year pro. This certainly isn't a reality Vikings fans wanted to see unfold, especially so soon into McCarthy's first year starting after coming back from a torn MCL.
To make matters worse, head coach Kevin O'Connell revealed exactly when McCarthy's injury took place. It was on a 2nd-and-20 in the third quarter on Sunday, and McCarthy wound up being taken down with what looked to be an illegal hip-drop tackle.
When fans started to see the video of this tackle surface, many became justifiably angry.

Kaden Elliss is the Atlanta Falcons player who illegally tackled Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy
Falcons linebacker Kaden Elliss appears to be the culprit on that tackle, No. 55 for Atlanta. If the league deemed this to be a hip-drop tackle, then Elliss would face a fine or suspension, and possibly both.
Yet, a fine or suspension doesn't take away the fact that Minnesota could be without its starting quarterback for the next month or so, and that includes back-to-back international games.
In his first year starting, McCarthy likely won't be on the field for the Vikings' games in Dublin, Ireland, in Week 4 or London, England, in Week 5.
Even aside from the fact that his talent will be missing, the idea that the young man might have to miss those experiences is a total gut punch. Who knows if or when the Vikings will be back to Dublin and/or London, let alone in back-to-back weeks?
For fans wondering why McCarthy wasn't able to pick it up in the second half, either, this injury explains it all. He was able to rise to the occasion late in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, even after the first few quarters looked bad.
But against the Falcons, he was dealing with significant pain. There was no chance for McCarthy to up his game after that tackle.
Now, the fact that he stuck it out and finished the game is flat-out impressive. You've got to give the guy props for that. But the tackle? That has no place in the game anymore. Elliss better receive league punishment.
