The Minnesota Vikings recently signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year deal, and he’s expected to compete with J.J. McCarthy for Minnesota’s starting quarterback job.
While the Vikings’ quarterback room is being billed as a competition, many people believe the starting job is Murray’s to lose, and that’s why he was brought in. A recent report echoes that sentiment.
On Monday, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently shared some of the details behind Murray’s signing with Minnesota.
According to Breer, the veteran quarterback and his camp quickly identified the Vikings as his best option, and Minnesota did the same with Murray. However, the Vikings didn’t just see the veteran quarterback as their best option for 2026; Breer says the franchise identified him as their best long-term option of the available quarterbacks, and Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell let Murray know that.
"While Murray still has to win the job from McCarthy, what O’Connell said to Murray did stick with him—that he was the one guy on the market that they could see as a potential longer-range answer, rather than a one-year Band-Aid."
Minnesota Vikings reportedly believe Kyler Murray could be team's long-term answer at quarterback
This could have just been a part of Minnesota’s pitch to make sure Murray signed with the team, but O’Connell’s reported statement also accurately reflects the quarterback market.
Kyler Murray is a two-time Pro Bowler and will only turn 29 in August. With Malik Willis, who’s still largely unproven as a starter, quickly moving to the Miami Dolphins this offseason, Minnesota’s only real other option who could’ve been a long-term answer was current Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Betting on Murray’s established production over Richardson’s promise makes sense, so it’s clear why the Vikings looked at all of the available quarterbacks and determined that Murray was their best hope for solving the quarterback problem.
The question now is if he’ll be able to actually do it.
Unless J.J. McCarthy takes a significant leap, Murray will likely win the starting quarterback job, but that will only be the start. The veteran quarterback must remain healthy to stay on the field, and he also has to deliver results.
If Murray can do all of those things, he will set himself up for a 2027 offseason where Minnesota will have to sign him to a long-term extension.
