On Thursday we joked a little bit about the seeming weirdness of Adrian Peterson suddenly showing up in a restaurant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on a day when he missed practice for reported “personal” reasons. But now we’ve learned that Peterson’s reasons for being in South Dakota were far from a laughing matter.

PFT reports that Peterson went to South Dakota to deal with a “tragic” situation involving a young family member. Stu Whitney of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader tweeted further details:

Nothing more is really known at this time about the matter, though there are some rumors floating around saying the situation may involve a toddler who was beaten by a man who has since been arrested. “Tragic” would indeed be the right word to describe such a situation.

The Vikings do say they expect Peterson back for practice on Friday.

Update: TMZ has unearthed further details about the situation and they are truly sad. Adrian’s 2-year-old son was severely beaten by a man who was dating the child’s mother and the child is currently in critical condition. The attacker, Joseph Patterson, is in custody on charges of aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.
