By Dan Zinski
Dom DeCicco’s long-shot quest to win a roster spot as a linebacker with the Vikings took what will likely prove to be a fatal hit with the news that he must undergo a surgical procedure on his hip.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said DeCicco will get the surgery on Thursday and after that…anybody’s guess (via ESPN.com):
"DeCicco’s return timetable is not certain, according to Zimmer. “I don’t know, we’ll have to see after the procedure,” Zimmer said."
DeCicco was at one time thought of as a possible heir-apparent to Brian Urlacher in Chicago but injuries ended that notion, and DeCicco ended up being let go by Chicago.
The Vikings picked the ex-Bear up earlier this offseason to help with their linebacker/special teams depth. Even with all the uncertainty at linebacker, DeCicco was never able to put himself in serious consideration for a future role with the team.
Mike Zimmer may be taking a wait-and-see approach in his public statements about DeCicco but that’s just good form by the coach. It was fun having you, DeCicco. Enjoy your fruit basket or whatever.
