The quarterback competition that never really existed has been brought to its entirely predictable conclusion with the news that the Vikings have tabbed Matt Cassel as their Week 1 starting quarterback.

Jay Glazer gets credit for the scoop:

One presumes that the Vikings will be making this announcement public in the coming hours.

The report on Cassel comes in the wake of some telling comments from Vikings star Adrian Peterson about why he thought Cassel should be the choice to start over Teddy Bridgewater:

It’s unlikely that Peterson’s input did anything to sway the Vikings brain trust but it’s nice when your moves are endorsed by your star players nonetheless.

This seems like a prudent decision by the Vikings given where Teddy Bridgewater is in his development. We’ve seen good things from the rookie in preseason so far but he’s still a rookie. Matt Cassel looked a little shaky at times against Kansas City but overall he had a solid preseason.

The known-quantity Cassel will be the starter coming out of camp while the rookie gets to continue climbing that learning curve. It’s hard to argue with the decision.
