Vikings Midseason Awards: Most Valuable Player

The Minnesota Vikings are entering their bye week with a record of 4-5.  While success has been hard to come across for the team as a whole, the team has accumulated many individual honors up to this point in the year.

To honor the members of the Vikings who are doing a great job this year, The Viking Age will be handing out their own midseason awards.

This week, we discuss the Most Valuable Player.  There are several Vikings players deserving of this honor, but only one has been a consistent force to make himself deserving of the award.

The Minnesota Vikings Midseason MVP is:  Everson Griffen!

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has been magnificent for the Vikings this year.  He’s been getting consistent pressures on the opposing quarterbacks and been solid in run defense.  Here are his statistics through 9 games according to ESPN.com:

35 combined tackles

29 solo tackles

9 sacks

1 forced fumble

4 stuffs

1 blocked kick

The Minnesota Vikings currently lead the NFL in sacks, accumulating 30 through the first 9 games of the year.  Of those 30 sacks, 30% of those takedowns have been from Everson Griffen. He is currently tied for second in the NFL when it comes to bringing down the quarterback. In addition, he leads all defensive ends in the stat as well as all defensive players in the NFC.

Sadly, the numbers don’t tell the whole story when it comes to Griffen.  His size, strength, and speed have made him one of the best pass rushers in the league right now.  If you watch his tape, you’ll see a player that can can chase down a running back from behind or beat an offensive tackle with a power move.  Everson Griffen’s athleticism is a very scary thing when guided by the solid coaching of Mike Zimmer.

Congratulations to Everson Griffen on winning The Viking Age’s Midseason MVP award!
