Some will believe that Peterson is getting just what he deserves given the severity of his actions. Others will believe the NFL is going way overboard in punishing Peterson.
And still others will read all sorts of ulterior motives into the league’s actions.
One former Peterson teammate definitely believes there’s more to this than just making sure Peterson is properly disciplined for his behavior.
One-time Viking left guard Steve Hutchinson thinks the NFL is making an example of Peterson by punishing him to this degree.
The NFL does seem very serious about cleaning up its image after this recent spate of domestic violence incidents.
As Hutchinson points out, punishing one of the league’s biggest and most profit-generating stars does send a pretty strong message to the rest of the players.
According to the NFLPA, the way the league has gone about arriving at and implementing that punishment has also sent a message: Forget about the CBA, we’ll just make up whatever punishments we want.
And that’s why the NFLPA is going to bat for Peterson.
The one thing we can be sure of? Players around the NFL have a lot less trust in their commissioner this morning than they did yesterday.
As long as the money keeps flowing, owners are going to continue putting their trust in King Roger.
