Jerick McKinnon Placed On Season Ending Injured Reserve

Minnesota Vikings rookie running back Jerick McKinnon was placed on Injured Reserve today, ending his season.

McKinnon was an unlikely starter for the Vikings this year, beating out Matt Asiata for the starting job after Adrian Peterson was removed from the team due to legal issues.  He was an effective running back until a lower back injury knocked him out of commission.

Here are Jerick McKinnon’s final stats for his rookie year with the Vikings:

11 games played

113 carries

538 rushing yards

4.8 yards per carry

27 catches

135 receiving yards

5 yards per catch

zero fumbles

McKinnon proved himself to be a dynamic and explosive player out of the Vikings backfield prior to his injury.  Now, Minnesota will have to rely on the more power based running approach of Matt Asiata while sprinkling in some runs for the recently acquired Ben Tate and backup Joe Banyard.

Defensive end Justin Trattou was brought up from the practice squad to take Jerick McKinnon’s spot on the Vikings active roster.  Also, safety Ahmad Dixon was signed to the Minnesota practice squad.

Jerick McKinnon joins a long list of offensive players on the Minnesota Vikings injured reserve list, including Matt Cassel, Phil Loadholt, Brandon Fusco, Chandler Harnish, Antonio Richardson, and Josh Samuda.  This list shows just how much the Vikings have struggled to stay healthy on the offensive side of the ball.

We at The Viking Age would like to wish Jerick McKinnon and speedy and full recovery.  Hopefully, he can return next year at full strength and continue to improve and develop at running back for the Minnesota Vikings.
