The Adrian Peterson situation has been a roller coaster of events. However, today’s news regarding his legal appeal on behalf of NFLPA could be the biggest yet.
Prior to today’s events, Adrian Peterson was set to have his future decided on April 15th, but the courts have made that deadline a mere afterthought now. With U.S. District Court Judge David Doty’s decision that the star running back was punished unfairly, Adrian Peterson’s suspension will now go back to the CBA process for re-evaluation.
Here is the NFLPA’s statement according to NFL.com:
"“This is a victory for the rule of law, due process and fairness. Our collective bargaining agreement has rules for implementation of the personal conduct policy and when those rules are violated, our union always stands up to protect our players’ rights. This is yet another example why neutral arbitration is good for our players, good for the owners and good for our game.”"
Feb 6, 2015; Minneapolis, MN, USA; Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson leaves the U.S. District Courthouse with his wife Ashley Brown Peterson as the NFL Players Association
As interesting as this move is, it doesn’t change a lot for now since it is the NFL’s offseason. But it does mean that the Minnesota Vikings will not have to wait until mid-April to learn whether or not they can trade Adrian Peterson if they decide to go that route. Instead, now he could be dealt anytime beginning March 10th, when the new NFL year begins.
The NFL will review the situation and could seek a circuit court injunction to argue this ruling, but the shorter period of time between now and March 10th or April 15th could make it difficult to be heard before then.
Since this is the Minnesota Vikings and star running back Adrian Peterson, there may be more developments in this case before the new year starts for the league or April 15th. There are still many issues that have to be resolved in this situation, including Adrian Peterson’s status on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission List, so stay tuned for more updates on this situation as they come up.
