Is ‘The Clock Ticking’ On Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson?

There were some very high expectations for Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson prior to the 2014 NFL season.  Many media outlets and fans were declaring him to be one of the breakout players in the league after a promising rookie campaign, but sadly those expectations came crashing down after a year full of injuries and struggles.

According to a video on NFL.com, NFL Network’s Jamie Dukes feels like Patterson is a ship lost at sea after struggling with concepts necessary to play wide receiver at the professional level.

Here’s what Dukes said:

"“There’s no question this guy is a phenomenal talent, but you have to be able to know and understand and comprehend the playbook. Right now they basically replaced Percy Harvin with him, because he’s that kind of an athlete, but the only problem has been, it’s about getting an opportunity and understanding and learning the craft at wide receiver. And that’s where he just seems to be kind of a ship that’s kind of lost at sea.”"

I thought that was a pretty fair assessment.  Cordarrelle Patterson does offer the same kind of dynamic playmaking and exciting returns that Percy Harvin did before his trade to Seattle.  Patterson did look “lost at sea” sometimes last season, but it is for that reason that he spent the offseason working with a trainer to improve his skill set.

Mental problems weren’t the only issues plaguing Patterson during his second season in the NFL.  He also worked through hip, hamstring, knee, and ankle issues during last year and should come into the 2015 season healthy and more mentally prepared.  However, not everyone has the same kind of optimism when it comes to Cordarrelle Patterson this season.  Jamie Dukes believes the clock is ticking on the former first round draft pick after just two seasons.

"“I’m not exactly sure I would say this is the make-or-break season but the clock is certainly ticking on him.”"

What do you guys think?  Is it too premature to be talking about the clock running out on Cordarrelle Patterson?  Or do the Vikings feel that they aren’t sure investing the time and effort in Patterson would be worthwhile?  Discuss it in the comments below.
