Minnesota Vikings Players Attend ‘Take A Kid Fishing Day’

Being a member of the Minnesota Vikings isn’t all about kicking butt on a football field.  Recently, we’ve talked about some of the great things that the team does, including the playground build and the visit with elementary school students.  The Vikings don’t have to limit their interaction with the youth of the nation to schools though, as several of the players hit the lakes on Saturday for the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Mounted Possse’s 12th Annual “Take a Kid Fishing Day” on East Jefferson and German Lakes.

This year’s Take A Kid Fishing Day was done in honor of Bob Geldner, a member of the Mounted Posse who allowed his property to be used for the event.

There was a great turnout.  60 kids ranging in age from 8 to 15 years old showed up along with nine members of the Minnesota Vikings.  SouthernMinn.com did not give the names of the players who attended the event, but they did say that the players did stick around after the fishing to enjoy a cookout as well as sign autographs.

In addition to learning how to fish, meeting members of the Minnesota Vikings and getting a good meal, each child who took part in the event got a free fishing rod and lifejacket.  Also, tips on water safety as well as other safety information was given out.

Sheriff Dave Tietz explained the goal of Take A Kid Fishing Day in the article on SouthernMinn.com.

"“The Posse’s mission is to benefit the youth. Our main thing is to educate the kids to wear life jackets. Then of course we grilled some hamburgers, pork patties, hot dogs and all the fixins. The kids get a rod, a lifejacket, a signed football and a hot dog. You can’t get a bigger smile on a kid’s face and we’ve got sunshine.”"

Huge thanks go out to the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Mounted Possse for hosting this great event.  Also, I’d love to be able to recognize the individual players of the Minnesota Vikings who donated their time for this event, but sometimes being anonymous and doing a great thing is just as admirable.
