Let’s be honest as Minnesota Vikings fans. We all knew that the naming rights of the new stadium being sold would leave us all a little underwhelmed. It’s never great to see something you love have its name attached to a corporation or other company to help offset the costs of having it. That’s why when it was announced that U.S. Bank’s purchase of the naming rights for the new stadium is good news that the stadium is getting the funding help, but bad news because now it will likely be referred to as U.S. Bank Stadium.

But there is still a chance that Vikings fans could have their cake and eat it too when it comes to the new facility.
Back in the days prior to the demolition of the old stadium, there was another name that the place where the Vikings played went by. Fans of EA Sports’ Madden NFL games series know that the into to the game when Minnesota was the home team would refer to Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. And yes, Mall of America field was a name that was used quite often for the Minnesota gridiron.
So, what if while the stadium was named U.S. Bank Stadium, the field itself was named after something else. This time, not something sponsored by big business or named after a shopping facility, but instead named after a Minnesota Vikings legend?
Personally, I think I could get past the constant U.S. Bank title if the team played on Bud Grant Field. Or Tarkenton Field. It would be another nice touch in bringing some of the Vikings history into the new building. While I’m impartial to Bud Grant Field just because I love the winning tradition that he brought to the team and relish in how much he interacts with fans and stays connected to the Vikings universe, there are many former Vikings players worthy of the honor.
So, if the new stadium doesn’t end up naming their field after a corporate sponsor, what would you like to see it called? Let me know your opinion in the comments below.
