When asked about the decision to cut Mays, head coach Mike Zimmer said only “it wasn’t working out.”

Mays was thought by some to a candidate to lock down a starting safety spot with Minnesota, but the former second round pick was likely never going to be in that mix. At best Mays would have been a special teams player and utility nickel weapon.

No one knows Taylor Mays better than Mike Zimmer, and Zimmer decided to cut him after looking at him in OTAs. That tells you all you need to know about where Mays is in his career.

Being cut by Minnesota at least afforded Mays the chance to catch on with another team before training camp. Maybe Zimmer had that favor in mind when letting Mays go before minicamp. Clearly, Mays was not going to be a factor with the Vikings.
