Minnesota Vikings: Peyton Manning praises Mike Zimmer

facebooktwitterreddit

Last week people joked about the way Mike Zimmer buttered up Philip Rivers with his talk about Rivers being one of the best QBs of all time.

This week Zimmer is the one being allegedly buttered and Peyton Manning is the one doing the alleged buttering.

Earlier this week Manning spoke about his respect for Zimmer and the defense that in Manning’s mind should bear Zimmer’s name (via Vikings.com):

"“Coach Zimmer, I’ve got a lot of respect for him, played against him a lot and had some good dogfights with him at the places he’s been,” Manning said. “He’s been doing it for a long time. He’s a tough coach. I’ve never played for him, but from what I know, I know he’s a tough guy and you see his imprint on this team.”“You hear about the different types of offenses out there, the West Coast offense, the Bill Walsh type of offense, I mean Zimmer, in my opinion is the founder of the defense he runs, that Cincinnati runs, Miami runs, different disciples,” Manning continued.“There may be somebody above him that was his founder or mentor, but we kind of refer to it as they’re running, kind of the Zimmer defense. You’ve got your own defense, you’re doing something good, right? That’s big.”"

If you only say really nice things about people, you never have to worry about your words being taken out of context and used as “bulletin board material.”

Peyton Manning has been in the game a long long time and understands how that works. Mike Zimmer has been in the game even longer and understands it even better.

Neither Manning nor Zimmer is going to say or do anything to ever fire up a player or coach on the other team. These guys are both wily veterans when it comes to playing the press game.

But the real game won’t start until Sunday when Zimmer has to match wits with Manning and Gary Kubiak on the field in Denver. Then the true fun begins.

And trust me, Mike Zimmer fully realizes that he has a bad record coaching against Peyton Manning teams.

Make no mistake: Mike Zimmer wants this one pretty bad.
