Stefon Diggs will start for Vikings vs. Detroit (Report)
By Dan Zinski
There was some talk after Stefon Diggs’ break out performance vs. Kansas City that the Vikings might actually relegate the rookie to a lesser role this week vs. Detroit while giving the start to Charles Johnson.
So much for that idea I guess.
According to Ben Goessling of ESPN, Diggs will indeed be in the starting lineup Sunday for the Vikings instead of Johnson.
Mike Zimmer gave us a pretty big hint early in the week when asked about Diggs’ status and whether Johnson would get back his old role in the offense after returning from injury (via ESPN):
"“You don’t lose your starting job because of injury but you lose your starting job because of performance,” Zimmer said Monday, in reference to Johnson. “I have not decided that yet.”"
The implication there clearly being that if Johnson did lose his starting job it would not be because he got hurt, it would be because he didn’t play well before getting hurt.
If this report is correct, I guess now we know where Zimmer stands in his assessment of the relative merits of Stefon Diggs and Charles Johnson at this point.
In truth, this was as much a case of Diggs winning the job as it was Johnson losing it. Diggs’ huge game against Kansas City coupled with Johnson’s less-than-stellar performance this year made this choice pretty easy.
