The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly interested in defensive back Lardarius Webb, who was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens.

The Minnesota Vikings have a hole to fill in their secondary this offseason. This is largely due to the loss of cornerback Captain Munnerlyn during free agency. Munnerlyn was an effective nickel corner in the Vikings defensive scheme. Veteran Lardarius Webb is perfect to fill that hole.

Webb has played cornerback and safety at a very high level in the NFL. By adding him to the roster, the Vikings would fix the loss of Munnerlyn. In addition, this move will provide depth at the safety position.

At 31-years-old the Vikings can sign him for a reasonable amount of money. Minnesota currently has just under $27 million in cap space, therefore signing Webb is not a financial issue. Compared to other available players and their market value, Webb is a smart choice.

In his most recent season Webb played multiple positions for the Ravens. He played both safety positions and appeared as the right cornerback. Webb finished 2016 with the most tackles in a season during his entire career. His impressive 2016 stats had him finish with 73 total tackles, one interception, and one sack.

More from The Viking Age

Lardarius Webb will also bring his Super Bowl winning experience to the Vikings secondary. That is something the Vikings need in order to get to the next level. The Vikings have excellent talent in place but need a veteran leader like Webb. Adding someone who took defensive direction from a player like Ray Lewis is overlooked, added value to the team.

His role will not be limited to just replacing Captain Munnerlyn and providing defensive back depth. His presence will also push current strong safety starter Andrew Sendejo to compete during camp. Webb is still good enough to start opposite of Harrison Smith if the Vikings choose to go that direction with him.

There is still a chance that the Baltimore Ravens will try to reach a deal with Webb. The Vikings are a better fit for where he is at in his career. He will make the Vikings secondary better with his skill, experience, and flexibility to play all defensive back positions.
