Special teams ace and cornerback Marcus Sherels will be returning to the Minnesota Vikings for the 2018 NFL season on a one-year deal.
Another of the free agents who were a member of the Minnesota Vikings will be returning to the team on a one-year contract according to a recent report from Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.
Marcus Sherels is a valuable part of the Vikings team, especially on special teams. He was handling returns (kick and punt) as well as took part in coverage as part of those units. However, he isn’t used on defense very much.
This will be the seventh season the cornerback and special teams ace will be a member of Minnesota’s football team. During that time, he has scored 5 touchdowns, all coming on punt returns.

Over the course of his career, Sherels has returned 208 punts for 2171 yards, an average of 10.4 yards per return according to Pro Football Reference. He has also added 51 kick returns for 1316 yards.
Sherels owns several franchise records with the Minnesota Vikings. Here are a few of them:
- Career punt return touchdowns (5)
- Career punt returns of more than 50 yards (5)
- Single season punt return average (15.2 in 2013)
- Single game punt return yardage (119 yards)
- Longest play of the preseason (109 yards)
While bringing Sherels back on a one-year deal does help out special teams in a huge way, fans shouldn’t view this as a big move at cornerback, where the team still could use help since Terence Newman is still a free agent and Tramaine Brock was signed by the Broncos in free agency.
Fans often discount Sherels for his lack of playing time on defense, but his contributions to special teams make this a smart move for the Vikings. Once the details of the contract are revealed, it will be easier to analyze the signing.
