Minnesota Vikings re-sign running back Ameer Abdullah for 2019
By Adam Carlson
The Minnesota Vikings have made the decision to sign running back Ameer Abdullah back to the team for the 2019 NFL season.
When talking about the high-priority free agents the Minnesota Vikings could be leaving the team, there were some big names to be worried about. While the team hasn’t been able to sign back several players, they did lock down running back Ameer Abdullah.
Abdullah was a midseason claim off waivers in 2018 from the Lions who joined the Vikings primarily as the kick return specialist and provided veteran depth at the running back position. Now, it appears as though Minnesota is giving him another shot to impress in 2019.
According to Andrew Krammer on Twitter, the Vikings have signed Abdullah:
The move does add another running back to the Minnesota roster, which is important after the New Orleans Saints signed Latavius Murray away in free agency and the news of legal issues possibly being in store for Roc Thomas.
For now, Abdullah should be penciled in as the team’s third running back, behind Dalvin Cook and Mike Boone. However, it is not out of the question for the Vikings to address the position during the 2019 NFL Draft.
Abdullah suited up for seven games for Minnesota in 2018. Offensively, he caught one pass for ten yards last season with Minnesota and didn’t register a single rushing attempt. On special teams, he returned 10 kickoffs for 256 yards and registered one tackle
At the time of this news, details of his contract have not been released, but it has to be assumed that the Vikings didn’t spend much of their thin salary cap to bring him back.
Congratulations to Ameer Abdullah on getting another shot with the Minnesota Vikings during the 2019 NFL season and possibly taking on a bigger role on offense.
