There have been rumors floating around of the Vikings potentially targeting a quarterback early in the draft. Instead, they should take a chance on a late-round prospect and hope for the best.

In my opinion, NFL teams should draft a quarterback on Day 3 every single year. You never know what may happen as a result, and the risk is much lower than the potential reward.

Colorado’s Steven Montez is someone who has the tools to be a quality backup at the next level. Montez has size – 6-foot-5, 235 pounds – and he is a great athlete. His footwork in the pocket allows him to step into throws or take off and run in he needs to. 2019 has been his worst season as a passer, so he should slide a little bit in the 2020 draft.

Montez has thrown a career-high 10 interceptions already this season, but he has also added 14 touchdown passes. He has never thrown for more than 3,000 yards in a season for Colorado, however, his presence as a dual-threat quarterback with a big arm makes him a draft crush.

He also has four years of experience under his belt. In four seasons, Montez has 72 total touchdowns – 60 passing, 11 rushing, and one receiving. On the flip side, he also has 33 interceptions and is completing just 62.4 percent of his throws.

Montez is not a polished quarterback right now but his traits are worth a look. Despite his struggles this season, the Vikings should still seriously consider spending a Day 3 pick to bring him in next year.
