Running Back

The Vikings love running the football and that’s a good thing since they have one of the deepest running back corps in the NFL.

The team is lead by superstar rusher Dalvin Cook. Cook is an explosive back who was a huge part of Minnesota’s offense a season ago. He is exceptionally fast, he can cut on a dime, and he also runs with great physicality.

He is an exceptional receiver out of the backfield and he is a true three-down back. The only knock on him is his durability, as he’s yet to complete a full 16-game NFL season.

Backing up Cook is second-year rusher, Alexander Mattison. Mattison had a solid rookie season in 2019 and like Cook, he proved to be a dual-threat back who can be a weapon as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.

He is a powerful runner who can push the pile, but he has underrated top speed. When he was on the field during games as a rookie, Minnesota’s offense didn’t miss a beat and he’ll be looking to get even more carries in his second season. He should see a vast increase in touchdowns and yards in 2020.

Third on the depth chart is Mike Boone, who is a slashing, violent runner. He doesn’t see the field often, but when he got the start for the Vikings in the final game of the 2019 season, he ran for nearly 150 yards and a score. He’s proven if Minnesota needs to rely on him, he will come through.

The Vikings also have veteran Ameer Abdullah on their roster and while he has slippery fingers, he does have great top speed and can be an asset in the passing game. Minnesota has also given the ball to fullback C.J. Ham when they were desperate and he’s shown the ability to pick up yards on the ground or through the air.

The Vikings’ current running back group is one of the strongest positions on the team. It is loaded with talent and it arguably has three players who could be starters if they were with other clubs.
