Defensive Tackle

For those fans that had their hearts set on the Vikings taking Alabama defensive tackle Christian Barmore at pick No. 14, my condolences. Minnesota went out and signed Dalvin Tomlinson from the New York Giants to a two-year deal, and he’ll be paired with Michael Pierce, forming the most intimidating run-stopping wall since Kevin and Pat Williams suited up for the Purple.

Tomlinson isn’t a typical three-technique defensive tackle as he’s more stoutly built than the average penetrator, but he’s extremely athletic. He’s lightning-quick off the snap and has the power and speed to push interior blockers into the backfield. He’s done it before in his career and has even played end, so there’s no question he has the athletic ability to excel in this role.

That being said, this signing fills the Vikings’ hole at defensive tackle. They have their starter opposite Pierce and even have decent depth behind him in Armon Watts and James Lynch. Minnesota will still likely use a mid-round pick on an interior disruptor with names like Jaylen Twyman, Darius Stills, and Marvin Wilson being options, but there’s no chance they take one at pick No. 14 now.

Barmore would’ve been a fun addition to this defense, but Minnesota Vikings fans are going to have to wait until he hits free agency in about five years.
