With the 66th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected Kellen Mond, a quarterback from Texas A&M.
The talk of the offseason for the Minnesota Vikings was focused on their future at quarterback with Kirk Cousins not locked in for the long term. They changed that in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday as they selected Kellen Mond, a quarterback out of Texas A&M, to potentially be the developmental man under center.
This was certainly a bit of a shocker given the talent available and some of the other areas of the Vikings‘ roster still needing to be fixed. On the other hand, this does give them a cheap backup with a chance to mold him into the starting quarterback in a year or two, which could be very beneficial down the road.
For today, let’s not dwell on this pick and speak only negatively about Mond because there is a lot to unpack about him as a player and his fit with this team. But it is worth wondering just how valuable he will be for this team in 2021 and in the following seasons.
Cousins is not on the hot seat, and his job is not in jeopardy as we head into next season, but there will be some fans who want Mond on the field as soon as things start to go poorly. Fortunately for all parties involved, Cousins likely won’t be pulled off the field in 2021.
That all said, what can Minnesota and their fans expect from Mond next season?
