3 free-agent cornerbacks the Vikings could sign after trading Mike Hughes

Could the Minnesota Vikings possibly be interested in adding a veteran cornerback to their roster this year after trading Mike Hughes on Thursday?

Back in 2018, the Minnesota Vikings were in need of improving the interior of their offensive line (sound familiar?).

There were a few prospects the Vikings could have selected with their first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to fill this need, but Mike Zimmer opted to use the selection on another corner for his defense instead. That corner, Mike Hughes, was traded on Thursday to the Kansas City Chiefs after just three years in Minnesota.

The Vikings had high hopes for Hughes and he even had the opportunity to open last season as one of the team’s top corners. But injuries prevented him from staying on the field in 2020, just like they have during the majority of his career.

After recently declining his fifth-year option, Hughes’ time in Minnesota was clearly approaching the end. Little did we know that the Vikings would end his tenure with the franchise even earlier than anyone had expected.

Even though Hughes’ role if he made the 2021 roster wasn’t expected to be very large, Minnesota could still look to at least replace the cornerback depth they might’ve lost by trading him on Thursday.
