6 deepest positions on the 2021 Minnesota Vikings roster
By Nik Edlund
Running Back
This position was a strength for the Vikings a season ago and while some of the faces have changed, it is still going to be very strong again in 2021.
It starts with Dalvin Cook who is simply one of the best and most dynamic backs in the NFL. He is a game-changing type of talent who can make something out of nothing, and turn a simple toss or screen into a huge gain that goes for six.
The only knock on Cook is his inability to stay healthy but the Vikings are prepared for that with Alexander Mattison. Mattison has done great in the times he’s had to step in for Cook, and while he doesn’t have that game-breaking speed, he is a dual-threat who can make plays through the air. In two seasons of seeing partial duty, Mattison has racked up 896 yards and averaged 4.6 yards a carry.
Where the big change comes this year is at RB3. A season ago, it was Mike Boone, but he was let go in the offseason and signed with the Broncos. In his place, will likely be rookie Kene Nwangwu. Nwangu is known for his explosive speed and will be a bit of change from Boone’s physical, slashing type of running. He’s got the talent to be a nice third option but can’t be trusted in that role until the Vikings see him produce in an actual game.
The Vikings will be just fine if Nwangwu can’t secure the third spot on the running back depth chart as they brought back Ameer Abdullah. Abdullah is an excellent option in the passing game and is a seasoned veteran who can step in and produce in an emergency situation.
The team also has fullback C.J. Ham on the roster who has shown the ability to produce an adequate running attack when he’s been forced to take on that role.
Running back has been and will remain to be a strength on the Vikings, as they are simply loaded at this position once again.
