Following an arrest for felony domestic violence on Sunday, former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is claiming it all to be a misunderstanding.

After participating in some pre-Super Bowl events last week, former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and his wife, Ashley Brown, boarded a plane to leave Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

However, the plane ended up taking off without Peterson on board after the former Vikings All-Pro was arrested for felony domestic assault, and he was taken into police custody.

Peterson and his wife allegedly got into a physical and verbal altercation on the plane according to TMZ. Following the former Minnesota running back’s arrest, his wife remained on the plane, and the flight was eventually able to depart Los Angeles.

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson comments on his arrest from Sunday

Following his arrest on Sunday, Peterson spoke over the phone to Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston about how the argument with his wife was “blown out of proportion.”

"“I was literally mind-blown that they took me to jail. They were like, ‘I’m sorry, Mr. Peterson, but because she had a scratch on her finger, [in] the state of California, we have to take you in.’ I sit there and watch the plane pull back and take off and I’m just like, ‘Wow! I cannot believe this is happening right now. I’m going to jail, and I literally didn’t do anything.’It’s blown out of proportion. Me and the wife got into an argument on the plane. That was pretty much the gist of it. I ended up grabbing her hand and taking her ring off her finger. She didn’t press any charges. The state of California pressed charges because there was a scratch on her hand. Literally, that’s why I went to jail, because the ring left a scratch on her finger. We just had a disagreement. I know the headlines: Domestic violence. You’d think I beat her up or something. It was nothing like that.Only thing I will say is it looks horrible because Adrian Peterson [was] arrested for domestic violence. I don’t hit women. It’s not that type of situation, and it just looks bad. I’ll deal with it, and God willing get the charges dropped and move on.”"

Peterson will turn 37-years-old in March and he’s coming off a 2021 season where he accumulated a total of 106 yards and two touchdowns in four appearances as a member of both the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks.

Whether Peterson believes the incident was blown out of proportion or not, this is something that is likely going to close the door on him suiting up for an NFL team ever again.

He was already viewed as a controversial player after he was charged with crimes related to child abuse in 2014 after leaving lacerations on the body of his 4-year-old son with a switch. Then in 2018, he revealed that he has continued to use a belt to discipline his children.

Peterson has said in the past that he wants to retire as a member of the Vikings when it finally comes time for him to hang up his cleats for good. Following Sunday’s incident, the chances of that actually happening now seem highly unlikely.
