Locking down Kirk Cousins

There are few more polarizing quarterbacks in the NFL than Kirk Cousins. Statistically speaking, the signal-caller enjoyed arguably his best campaign in 2021, but there was something missing when it came to the crunch and the Vikings missed the postseason for the second straight year.

Giving Cousins the benefit of the doubt as his relationship with Mike Zimmer soured is understandable. There was never really serious consideration given to trading the Michigan State product this offseason, but handing him a one-year extension was a supreme vote of confidence in the player from those in newly-acquired positions of power.

Cousins has a previous working relationship with Kevin O’Connell, which can help ease the transition. The Vikings also possess some exceptional pass-catchers, a strong running game led by Dalvin Cook, and an offensive line that should also provide more stability for the man under center.

Everything is in place for Cousins to thrive. If the scheme becomes expensive and plays to his strengths, then it could see the veteran put up some career numbers along the way.

Coming through in the clutch will be Cousins’ biggest challenge. Minnesota lost a lot of close games last season and if the same happens again, then expect the front office to examine an exceptional group of quarterbacks entering the NFL from the college ranks in 2023.
