Wyatt Davis – OG

There were many Vikings fans who were very excited when the team took Wyatt Davis in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Early that draft season he was considered a top-15 pick after an impressive career at Ohio State. He was considered a lock to start for the Vikings at one of the guard spots, and many assumed he’d keep that spot for the better half of the next decade.

As camp progressed last year, Davis was running with the third team and while he ended up making the final 53, he barely saw any snaps during his rookie season. This led to a lot of speculation from the Vikings beat writers and podcasters who had theories that he wasn’t healthy or maybe somehow got in Mike Zimmer’s dog house. Perhaps the real reason is much simpler. Maybe, just maybe, Wyatt Davis isn’t very good.

The fact that Davis is still running with the third team suggests that may just be the case. He is buried on a depth chart that really isn’t loaded with top talent. Ahead of him he has a second-round rookie, and a couple of journeymen swing players in Jesse Davis and Chris Reed. Unless something shocking happens and Davis suddenly plays out of his head and has a meteoric rise up the depth chart, a real possibility exists that he doesn’t make the team this season.
