It is a massive challenge to have a long career in today's NFL. Age, injuries, and talent issues can all lead to an early exit from the league. However, former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen played 12 years as a pro, retiring after the 2026 season.

When a player isn't forced out of the league, how do they know when to hang up their cleats for good? That decision can be extremely tough to make, especially if a player is having fun, still contributing, or making a lot of money. That is exactly the situation that Adam Thielen faced with the Vikings, Panthers, and Steelers.

Being able to play until 35 years old is an honor, and it is one that an undrafted free agent like Thielen understands doesn't happen for many players. But he knew when it was time to retire from the sport for good.

Former Minnesota Vikings WR Adam Thielen got honest about the moment he knew it was time to retire

During a recent appearance on KFAN's Power Trip on iHeart Radio, former Minnesota Vikings pass catcher Adam Thielen shared the moment he knew it was time to retire from football.

“I think there’s a time in your career that they just look at you differently, no matter what, so that was really hard for me to take in… I should’ve been better about handling that.”

Hitting that wall where factors start to make the league view you in different ways can be a challenge. When being a veteran and having experience becomes being old and hanging on to your past, it is time to consider hanging up your cleats.

Adam Thielen is a unique player. In 2023, he had over 1,000 receiving yards with the Carolina Panthers in a system with a young quarterback. That should have sent his stock soaring. Instead, he was viewed as a 33-year-old who doesn't have a lot of gas left in the tank.

Thielen had to fight his way from being an undrafted free agent in Minnesota to make the Pro Bowl as one of the most trusted receivers in the league.

Although his time with the Vikings may not have ended the way he might have liked, it was great to see the potential Ring of Honor talent have such a long, fruitful career in the NFL, especially after knowing how hard his struggle was to achieve that success.
