Daniel Jones has had a very interesting last year or so in the NFL, and it's something the Minnesota Vikings got to be a small part of. In November of the 2024 NFL Season, the New York Giants cut Daniel Jones in one of the more shocking in-season moves we've seen in the NFL in quite some time.
Jones had a pretty brutal tenure with the New York Giants from 2019 to 2024. The Giants did make the playoffs with Jones in 2022, but it became clear quite quickly that the 2022 season was an outlier. Well, Daniel Jones had a cup of coffee with the Minnesota Vikings at the end of the 2024 NFL Season.
There were rumblings that Minnesota wanted him back on the roster this past offseason, but Jones decided to sign a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, and through three games, he and the Colts are lighting up the NFL, and Indianapolis is finding out what Minnesota was never able to about Daniel Jones.
Daniel Jones is playing his tail off, and the Minnesota Vikings never got to experience it for themselves
Jones and the Colts are 3-0 through three weeks and truly look like one of the five-best teams in the NFL. The former Vikings' QB has completed 71.6% of his passes for 816 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
He's got a stellar 111.7 passer rating and is on a Colts' offense averaging 34.3 points per game, which is the second-most in the NFL. Back in Minnesota, the Vikings already saw their second-year QB, JJ McCarthy, go down with an ankle injury.
What makes this situation even more interesting is that Carson Wentz, the Vikings' backup, played quite well in the team's blowout win over the Cincinnati Bengals, and in the coming weeks, the Vikings are set to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles.
Not only is the QB situation in Minnesota uncertain, but Jones and the Colts are in a position to keep stacking wins. Indy plays the LA Rams, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals over the next couple of weeks.
You almost have to wonder if GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made a mistake by not being more aggressive in trying to retain Jones, as the second-year McCarthy already has his second notable injury of his young career. Furthermore, with how talented the Vikings' roster is, are they guaranteed to go back to McCarthy when he's healthy enough?
The situation in Minnesota is a bit odd, and you have to wonder if they could have scored some ideal clarity if Daniel Jones was back and starting for them.
